These socks are adapted from a hand-knitting pattern that I came across. An
interesting concept! There is no shaped heel. Twist the stocking so the spirals
run straight up your leg. This forms the heel and helps it to fit snugly. Good
bed stockings!
Elimination of the heel also makes these stockings more of a
‘one size fits all’. You may adjust the length of knitting according to the
wearer’s wishes. The stitch pattern repeat is 6 stitches wide by 36 rows long.
To change the width of the stocking, subtract or add 3 stitches on each side.
This will insure matching seams.
I have used Panama for my sample
stockings knit at tension 5 on the G-carriage for absorbency. For bed socks,
Trenzado would be toasty warm!
NOTE: I also used woolly
nylon (on cones) for reinforcement in the toe shaping.

Knit 2 stockings alike.
1.Cast on 86 sts with the G-carriage. Knit
13 rows in 1x1 rib at tension 5. Carriage right.
Program for spiral rib, and
knit 144 rows at tension 5. Carriage right.
2.Change to the regular carriage;
hold button on. Left half of stocking is in hold plus stitch #43R next to the
carriage. Knit one row to the left; bring the 1st needle in working position
next to the carriage to hold position and knit to the right. *Again bring 1st
needle in B next to the carriage to hold position; knit one row.** Repeat from *
to ** until there are 17 stitches in work (B) position. BEFORE YOU KNIT THIS ROW
TO THE RIGHT, carefully push the 1st needle in hold position OPPOSITE the
carriage back to upper working (C or D) position. Now knit the row. Repeat the
above step, pushing the 1st needle opposite the carriage back to upper working
position and knitting one row. Continue in this manner until all stitches are
knit back into working position. Yes, your yarn is in the middle of the
stocking. Cut a long tail to use for grafting. Take carriage off hold and remove
stocking on waste yarn. By leaving the grafting yarn in the middle of the
stocking, you have divided the sock in half, assuring that your stitches will
match perfectly at the seam!
3.Fold the stocking in half and graft the
stitches from the center out. I graft from the purl side. If you are used to
doing this from the knit side, that’s fine, too.
4.Sew the side seam,
matching the spiral ribs. Wear each stocking with the seam to the inside. Twist
to form the heel.
