This is a great pattern for all sizes; used by children under snowsuits, snow
mobilers or anyone who wishes their head & neck snug & cozy for their winter
activities. These Helmets have been a popular sales item at Craft Shows & our
Knitting Guild make about 50 of these each year to put in our Basket of Knitted
goods we donate to the Salvation Army at Christmas time.
HELMET
YARN: Tamm Star or Bramwell Fine 4 Ply or any fine 4 ply weight
SIZES: Small, Medium, Large
TENSION: 1x1 Rib with Garter Carriage - TD3
1x1 Rib with Ribber - TD3/3
Main Tension - 6
(stitches & rows are not important as the size is in a "general size" range
Cast on 120 (130, 140) sts & rib for 40 (50, 50) rows.
(If using ribber, transfer all stitches to MB)
RC000 Knit 12 (14, 28) rows at MT
Face Shaping;
Set carriage for Partial Knitting. Put stitches to Holding Position opposite the
carriage.
Begin with 5 ( 6, 6) sts on next 2 rows
Follow with 4 (5, 5) stitches on next 2 rows
Follow with 3 ( 4, 4) stitches on next 2 rows
Follow with 2 (3, 3) stitches on next 2 rows
Follow with 1 st opposite the carriage every row 12 times to 20 (24, 24) sts in
HP each side
Knit the stitches in HP on each side back to NWP on a ravel cord.
Short row down to 34 sts. (17-0-17) & then back out
Opposite the carriage pull the 20 (24, 24) sts on ravel cord back to WP. Knit 1
row. Opposite the carriage, pull the other 20 (24, 24)
stitches back into working position. Knit 1 row over all stitches.
Face Edging;
To create a Hem at the Face edge, arrange all your stitches for ribbing either
by the Garter Carriage on the MB or for 1x1 Rib with the Ribber.
RC000, COR, Rib Tension Rib 18 (20, 20) rows ending with COR. (if using Ribber
transfer all stitches to MB)
Hang a hem on the Knit Stitches (facing you) by picking up the sinker bar from
the Knit stitch from the first row of ribbing. You will have 2 stitches on the
Knit Stitches (EON).
Latch off around the Gate Pegs.
Sew Centre front seam
