Mid-Gauge Child's Felted Hat and Adult Felted Hat
by Miki Hayes, BP Farms

Child's Hat with Feather and Braid and Adult Hat with Feather

Child's Hat

Machine: KX 350 mid gauge, can fit young child up to child of 9 or 10, depending on the amount of felting

C/O 100 st using the every other needle technique and loosest possible tension and any wool yarn you happen to have handy. I used worsted weight.

RC 000 knit for 3 inches (approx RC 12)

next round starting from center and working towards both edges *count out 8 k stitches, then k2together* do this all the way across. This involves systematically moving stitches to make sure ther are no empty needles in the working area. You should end up with about 90 stitches.

knit 2 more inches (approx RC 20)

Crown starts here:
row 1: starting at center and working towards both edges, *k2 together 4
times, then k1* do this across (you should have 50 stitches) then knit

row 2 & 3: knit

row 4: *starting at edges and working towards center count 2 knits and then make one stitch by leaving a needle empty (if you want little holes to lace a ribbon through, do it this way. if not, then pull up the loop below to put on the empty stitch to make a stitch)* (you will end up with about 69 stitches) then knit on these stitches until the hat measures 12 inches from start

Top starts here:

row 1: *starting at center and working towards both edges, count out 5 stitches then k2 together* then knit (make sure there are no empty working needles)

row 2&3: knit

row 4: *starting at center and working towards both edges, count out 4 stitches then k2 together* then knit

row 5&6: knit

row 7: *starting at center and working towards both edges, count out 3 stitches then k2 together* then knit

row 8: knit

row 9: *starting at center and working towards both edges, count out 2 stitches then k2 together* then knit

row 10: knit

row 11: *starting at center and working towards both edges, count out 1 stitch then k2 together* then knit

row 12: knit

row 13: k2 together across (make sure no empty needles are in working area)

row 14: k2 together across

Finishing: run a tail through the last 5 stitches and remove from machine.Tail should be about 3 times the length of the hat for sewing up the edges. Using invisible blanket stitch, sew edges together. At brim you might want to change the side you are sewing on so a seam doesn't show when the hat is done. You end up with a long floppy hat shape. Take that and run it
through the washer a couple times on hot wash, cold rinse to felt it. When it is felted enough for you (size is right for the intended wearer), mold it into shape over a bowl and set it to air dry. Embellish with ribbon, silk flowers, etc.

Adult Hat
